Duck Race

Duck Race

The annual Duck Race on the Smite took place on 9th April 2011 - a delightfully sunny Spring day only marred by the sudden withdrawal by Jane Wheelhouse of permission for spectators to view the race from her adjacent field.  This was a real blow and could have denied many people much of the enjoyment of the event.
However the wonderful Musserts family, who were manning the finishing line, invited everyone to come to their garden and view the final stages of the race from their bank.  It was a grandstand view they provided of the ducks as they floated serenely down the river, dashed down the rapids and then struggled against the headwind to reach the finishing line.
"The ducks are very excited" said Heather as she led the countdown for the start and on the shout of" QUACK" 600 ducks were launched on their adventure.
Mr Musserts and his son followed in the river to make sure all the ducks reached their destination while other members of his family waited, knee deep in the water, to greet the winning ducks.
Afterwards there were celebratory drinks, teas and cakes in the Hall.

On the day over £600 was raised from sale of duck tickets, teas and bar sales.  The committee are very grateful to the Musserts family, and to all those who manned the bar, made the cakes and served the teas.  Special thanks go to Gordon Ayres and Heather Ridgeway who organised this most enjoyable event.
